Department Details
The department of history of NSS College Manieri, came in to existence in 1965. It has its credit the symbiosis of the values of the oldest traditions and the new paradigms of the present technologically advanced era of higher education in Kerala. The Department was established with Sri. N. Vijayan, as the HOD and is blessed with the services of many illustrious faculties.Till the year 1992-93, the department handled pre-degree and Degree classes only. Department was upgraded in 1993-94 when M A history was started. As years passed by it has become one of the largest departments of the college with 40 in UG and 10 PG students. At present there are six permanent members and one guest in the faculty with Dr. Sajan R as the head of the department (Since 2014). The department of history has one of the most sought after centers for post graduate studies in University of Calicut.
The department follows, the syllabus prescribed by the University of Calicut to which our institution is affiliated. The curriculum restructuring is a prerogative of the university and department is fortunate enough to reflect its suggestions regarding curriculum restructuring from time to time through its representatives in the respective university bodies. In addition to this, some of the faculty participated in various curricular workshops organized by the university in order to enrich the students’ awareness in various allied arenas of academic pursuit; various programme were organized by the department, which includes quiz competitions, field surveys, site seeing, tours etc. Department faculty participated in both internal external examinations of the university regularly. In order to provide more interactive and self-learning programmers to the students, we are conducting internal examinations on the basis of work schedule, incorporated in the department academic calendar the practice of conducting PTS and PTA is another mechanism through which we ensure, parent participation in higher education field Since department is the oldest one in the college, we have a potential group of alumnus. Alumni association usually meets once in a year.
Students are admitted at UG and PG level strictly on the basis of university directions. The sanctioned student strength of the department is an average, 120 at UG level and 30 PG level. The students will be subjected to an IQ test during the first term of their course programme in order to assess their aptitude, general awareness and reasoning power. Different course programmes are employed to uplift the slow learners. Department has specific programmes to ensure student progression at a desired level. Remedial courses, interdisciplinary classes, field trips and preparation of questions bank etc are to be mentioned. The student evaluation of teachers is aimed to ensure persistent qualitative up-gradation of the teachers. The tutorial system is effectively implemented and group tutors are instructed to follow a well-defined course plan. Since the department has a good number of students from socially and economically backward sections of the society, a grievance redressal cell is inevitable. One of the faculties of this department is in charge of this cell.
The PG students of the department have to submit a dissertation at the end of their fourth semester studies. The faculty takes serious care in supporting the student in the selection of the topic, methodology and research aptitude. The students are stimulated to be in tune with society in which they live. This is especially relevant in the case of a study programme on humanities. As a result a potential group of youngsters are being selected and entrusted with the task of creating socially useful contributions. Manuscript magazines and archeological site awareness camps etc are some of the successful attempts in this regards. Two faculties, Dr.Sajan R and Dr.Haripriya M have secured PhD degree during this period. Sandhya M Unnikrishnan, one of our faculties, is presently doing research leading to PhD. Four faculties have completed and submitted UGC Minor Research Project. All faculties have research publications.
